Botox is an FDA-approved treatment for the temporary reduction of moderate to severe frown lines between the brows. It acts as a muscle relaxant and is FDA-approved to control excessive sweating (known as hyperhidrosis). Improvements can last up to six months. Botox should be carefully injected by a physician in low doses. It contains only tiny quantities of botulinum A toxin, produced by a bacterium called Clostridium botulinum. There is no intact bacteria in Botox and no chance of getting botulism from injections. Botox has been used in the U.S. since 1992. In small doses, there is no scarring or side effects. If Botox migrates from the injection site, such as the forehead (a rare occurrence), it can cause a droop of the upper eyelids or eyebrows for a week or two. Patients should not massage the injection site for 12 hours after treatment. |
